Actions

We are grateful to God that our community has a large number of believers who actively participate in everyday monastery activities. Together, we cultivate the ancient Serbian custom of mutual assistance in rural households called “moba.”

In addition to that, we are proud that our monastery hosts various cultural and artistic activities, and of course, the fact that an increasing number of believers and officials visit us.

What is MOBA?

The traditional Serbian custom of mutual assistance in rural households is called “moba.” Older generations certainly know what moba means, while younger people may not have had the opportunity to get acquainted with it. It is important to emphasize that moba is still organized today in some rural households.

On the countryside, there is a lot of work to do, and often members of one household cannot do it alone. Then they ask friends or neighbors to help them. Usually, neighbors help each other on the principle of reciprocity. In the past, “mobe” were called to quickly do some seasonal agricultural work. Of course, “mobe” were also called for other purposes, such as building a house or some auxiliary object within the household. Also, for larger celebrations (weddings and the like), it is customary not to pay for labor, but to call a “moba”. It is common practice in many villages to organize a “moba” when building a joint public facility such as a school, church, and the like.
