Draganac Monastery

is a cenobitic monastery, which implies the common presence of the brotherhood in worship and at meals. The daily life of a member of the brotherhood involves participating in worship, obedience, individual prayer, and rest. Everyone is called to obedience to the igumen, but humility and obedience to Christ are the foundation on which we try to establish our community, following the words of the Gospel: “If anyone wants to be first, he must be the very last, and the servant of all” (Mark 9:35).

There are currently five monks living in the monastery, and during the weekdays, there are also several workers who are responsible for helping the brotherhood with their tasks.

worship services

The brotherhood strives to follow the Holy Mountain Typikon, which means a full daily cycle of services. In the early morning, the first service of Midnight Office begins, followed by the Morning Service with the Katavasias and Canons, and then the Divine Liturgy. After a short break, the community gathers for a common meal, while the abbot and the brotherhood dine together and a member of the brotherhood (lector) reads suitable literature (patristic writings, sermons, hagiographies of saints, etc.). In the afternoon, the reading of the Ninth Hour with Vespers follows, after which there is immediately dinner or a second meal. Compline is the shortest and final service of the day, which follows after dinner and concludes the daily cycle of services.

Obedience

Each member of the brotherhood has their own work obedience, “work in the hands, prayer on the lips” is a centuries-old monastic tradition where prayer becomes breathing and work is the path to joy.

Obediences can be different, a church worker – the one responsible for order and cleanliness in the church, preparing liturgical objects, a cook – preparing meals for the brotherhood, workers and guests, a table waiter – setting up, clearing the table and assisting the cook, work in the monastery workshop – following ancient tradition, our monastery has its own handicrafts, a hospitality worker – responsible for welcoming and receiving guests, work on the monastery farm, work in the office and numerous obediences brought by seasonal jobs and dynamic monastic life.

By the work of our hands in the monastery, we produce several products. Monastery aromatic incense has its customers on all continents and has become a brand that many know about Draganac. There are also products made of wood (crosses and icons), from the monastery farm we get fruit, vegetables, wheat, goat cheese, and honey.

Monastery Space

The monastery is located at an altitude of 800m, surrounded by shrubbery, and covers approximately one hectare of land in a circular layout. The central point of the monastery is the church dedicated to the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, surrounded by buildings of various functions in a full circle. The church is a single-nave building erected in 1868 on the foundations of a medieval sanctuary. The church’s foundation is cross-shaped, with three circular polygons inside and outside. The altar space is raised by three steps in relation to the naos. A dome is constructed over the central part of the naos. The cube is structurally unusual, and according to historical records, the builder’s desire was to resemble the church in Gračanica. The church was built of hewn stone blocks, while the entire construction of the cube was performed by rhythmically placing bricks. At the very entrance to the monastery, there is a wide cobblestone parking lot with a “Great Guest House,” which serves for Sunday and holiday agapes and the celebration of the Feast of St. Petka and the Feast of St. Archangel Gabriel during the warm months. After entering the monastery gate, on the left side, there are monastic cells with a monastic quarters in the center, while on the right side, there is a “Great Quarters” with over fifty beds for guests, as well as auxiliary buildings that are still under construction. 1 km northeast of the monastery is the monastery’s economy with a goat farm, dairy, monastery house, several hectares of arable land, greenhouses, and beehives.
