About our incense
We are grateful to God that we had the opportunity to learn how to produce very high-quality fragrant incense according to the traditional Athonite recipe.
One of our excellent handcrafted products at the Monastery of Draganač is the production of fragrant incense for the church, for our domestic use, and for sale.
Many monasteries produce fragrant incense, and we will describe how we make ours here, following the recipe from the cells of Mount Athos, because it is much softer than many of those sold today, and, you will be convinced, it burns completely without turning into smoldering embers, as often happens.
We use high-quality fragrances (in generous amounts) identical to those used in communities on Mount Athos.
We produce fragrant frankincense on our own, with prayer and love.
Today, the fragrant incense of the Draganač Monastery is sold on all continents of the world.
The Athonite monks developed our method of making incense, in which frankincense resin is mixed with various scents. This type of incense production is very demanding. Besides requiring strong hands to knead the sticky frankincense resin, anyone making incense must have strong healthy lungs, as a strong scent is inhaled throughout the entire production process. In the past, only small cells made incense on Mount Athos and were able to serve everyone, even selling to larger monasteries and loading cargo. Nowadays, in addition to these cells, large monasteries also produce incense, at least for their own shops. The most famous producer of incense is the Vatopedi Monastery on Mount Athos, and there are also Athonites from Docheiariou, Grigoriou, etc.
After the necessary amount of pure frankincense is measured, it is ground into a powder using a special mill. The ground frankincense is then placed in a large mixing bowl, to which a certain amount of scent is added for every kilogram of frankincense powder.
The quality of the final product depends on the quality of the fragrance and pure frankincense.
In our production, we use scents such as Byzantine, Bethlehem, amber, cypress, myrrh, gardenia, rose, nard… And we source the pure frankincense from prestigious distributors in Athens.
The quality of the fragrance and the purity of the frankincense determines the quality of the final product.
Once the basic frankincense powder and the scent are mixed, the mixture is pressed at a certain temperature to form sticks that are left to dry for 24 hours. The next day, the sticks are cut into granules, which are then sprinkled and rolled in birch ash (finely granulated calcium carbonate) to prevent the granules from sticking together due to their resinous content. This is followed by another 24-hour drying stage.
After the frankincense has dried for the necessary time, it is placed in boxes for sale. Some producers hurry to put frankincense in boxes for sale so that it does not lose weight by evaporation. In Draganac, we strive to make only the highest quality frankincense at every stage of production, because we offer that frankincense to God, so all our effort and attention to detail is worth the effort.
